Japanese mobile network operator KDDI, which has over 31 million subscribers, has chosen Gemalto to work with it on an NFC trial. The manufacturer will provide its User Identity Module (UIM) cards and Trusted Service Management (TSM) solution for the trial which is running from May to December 2010.
Participants in this pilot can experience NFC services from m-payments to transport services, e-driver licences and e-ticketing, as well as acquire information from smart posters. Various industries are participating, including car manufacturers, airline companies and cinema operators.
Gemalto is responsible for the preparation and management of sensitive user information between KDDI and the other service providers, as well as the provision of multiple mobile applications to subscribers.
This NFC project will be based on international standards, complying with the GSMA’s Pay-Buy-Mobile specifications. Japan is already the world’s most advanced mobile contactless market with 18% of mobile subscribers using mobile contactless services.
